MIMOSA Platinum Mine has injected US$4 million in financial and material support to transform Mberengwa District Hospital into a state-of-the-art medical facility.
The massive upgrade is expected to attract patient referrals from neighbouring districts due to its modern infrastructure and newly installed equipment.
Touring the newly face-lifted complex, Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, lauded the corporate social responsibility initiative, hailing it as a major milestone compliant with the government’s Vision 2030 agenda.
As part of the holistic infrastructure improvement, the mining giant also funded and constructed a 1.2-kilometre tarred access road linking the main network directly to the hospital entrance.
The multi-million-dollar project delivered an impressive array of new and modernized infrastructure across the hospital grounds, including brand new male and female wards that each feature a 26-bed capacity, alongside a specialized, newly constructed 26-bed maternity unit.
Additionally, the Out-Patient Department (OPD) received six advanced consultation rooms to optimize patient intake, while the rest of the campus saw the addition of a brand new operating theatre, a modern administrative block complete with a boardroom, an industrial kitchen, a laundry department, and a secure guardroom.
Before this intervention, the facility fell short of basic healthcare expectations, with Midlands Provincial Medical Director, Dr. Mary Machekeza, stating that prior to the facelift, Mberengwa Hospital lacked the fundamental infrastructure to even be rightfully called a district hospital.
While celebrating the transformation, Dr. Machekeza highlighted the immediate need for human resources to match the hospital’s new capabilities, appealing directly to the government to urgently deploy more doctors, nurses, and anaesthetists to effectively staff the expanded infrastructure.
Speaking to stakeholders during the tour, Mimosa General Manager Stephen Ndiyamba emphasized that the company’s commitment to community development remains steadfast, assuring the public that more support will be directed toward local impact initiatives in the future.
