HARARE (Mining Index) – THE National Employment Council (NEC) for the mining industry has dismissed new wages for mine workers which have been circulating on social media as fake.
Theere has been reports that NEC had approved new wages for mine workers.
“The NEC for the mining industry would like to inform its stakeholders and the nation at large that the circulating new wages purported to have been reached on 10 August 2021 and circulating on social media is fake,” NEC Mining Industry Secretary General Tsaurai Kabote said.
The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) is pushing for NEC to convene a stakeholders meeting to review the mine workers wages.
The wages, ZDAMWU reasons, have been eroded by inflation and mine workers being the cog of the country’s economy must be given a living wage.
Kabote says formal communication channels will be used when there are any new developments on wages.
“The NEC categorically distances itself from the forged agreement and would like to encourage all stakeholders to ignore it,” Kabote said.
He added that NEC was exploring ways of bringing the origanators of the document to book.
“As usual, stakeholders will be informed of current outcomes of wage negotiations through our formal channels of communication,” said. Kabote. ENDS// www.miningindex.co.zw
