Blanket Mine Private Limited, a subsidiary of Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc, distributed a US$2.5 million dividend to the Gwanda Community Share Ownership Trust, pushing cumulative payouts to the trust past US$18.9 million since the arrangement began in 2012.
The latest financial transfer underscores a long-running model of community equity participation in Zimbabwe’s extractive sector, moving past traditional corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, local employment, and procurement.
The payout arrives amid steady operational developments at the gold-producing asset located in Matabeleland South.
Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc reported an 18% quarter-on-quarter increase in gold production earlier in the year, anchored by an underground mineral resource base of 2.178 million ounces and an established 13.9 MWp solar photovoltaic facility supporting mine operations.
Through its shareholding structure, the Gwanda Community Share Ownership Trust chaired by Chief Mathema received direct financial returns from Blanket Mine’s commercial output.
Over more than a decade, these distributions have funded localized infrastructure and service delivery projects across the Gwanda district, ranging from educational and health facilities to community-driven economic developments.
In a public statement regarding the distribution, Caledonia Mining Plc emphasized that “strong partnerships between mining operations and host communities are fundamental to creating lasting benefits in Zimbabwe”.
For policymakers and industry analysts, the milestone highlights how statutory or negotiated community share ownership trusts can convert non-renewable mineral wealth into recurring local capital.
However, local stakeholders and watchdogs continue to monitor how effectively cumulative disbursements, now surpassing US$18.9 million, translate into tangible, long-term socio-economic resilience for households in Gwanda![]()
