Three Chinese nationals shot in copper plant robbery

THREE Chinese nationals sustained serious injuries after robbers fired shots during a movie-style robbery at a copper processing plant in Chinhoyi.

The incident occurred around 1am Sunday morning at Lanyun Mining Zimbabwe copper processing unit situated at Alaska on the outskirts of Chinhoyi.

The injured trio is currently admitted at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital where they are receiving treatment. They were identified as Chen Fang Jun (49) Helong (25) and Wang Yin Bin (49).

Jun was shot once on the upper arm while Helong was shot on both legs, and Bin also had both legs shot resulting in one being fractured.

Speaking through an interpreter, Lanyun Mining Zimbabwe director, Huang, told NewZimbabwe.com that at around 1am Sunday, a gang of about five or six men invaded the company premises, which also houses staff quarters, and stormed into the rooms occupied by Jun, Helong and Bin, before running riot.

“The robbers were armed with pistols and shotguns. They confronted my colleagues and started shouting ‘where is the money?’ before shooting at them indiscriminately.

“They also fired several shots into the air, before deflating tyres to three vehicles, two Toyota GD6s and a Vitz, and ransacked the place. One of the victims surrendered US$800 which he had while a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money was stolen,” Huang narrated.

Police sources said investigations into the robbery and shooting incident are underway.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson, Inspector lan Kohwera could not be reached for comment by the time of publishing. – (New Zimbabwe)
