Violence broke out at Wanderer Mine Site Number 4 in Shurugwi early Tuesday after clashes between artisanal miners and security personnel guarding disputed gold claims resulted in the destruction of five excavators.

The heavy-duty mining equipment belonged to Chengxi Mine, a Chinese-owned company that holds mining rights over the area.

According to reports from the site, tensions escalated when security guards attempted to remove artisanal miners from the claims. The miners allegedly resisted the operation, leading to confrontations that quickly turned violent. During the unrest, the security personnel were overpowered and forced to retreat before the five excavators were set ablaze.

Police in the Midlands Province confirmed the deployment of reinforcement units to restore order and secure the mining area.

Several security guards reportedly sustained injuries during the clashes and were taken to Shurugwi District Hospital for treatment. Authorities said no fatalities had been recorded.

Investigations into the destruction of property and the outbreak of violence are underway. Police have secured the scene and are assessing the extent of the damage caused to the mining equipment.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions between formal mining operators and artisanal miners in mineral-rich parts of the Midlands, where disputes over access to gold-bearing ground have frequently sparked conflict.

Small-scale mining groups have previously called for clearer delineation of mining claims and greater dialogue between investors and local mining communities.

Mining activities at the affected site have been temporarily suspended, with security forces maintaining a presence in the area to prevent further disturbances.
