The Mine Ventilation Society of Zimbabwe (MVSZ) will convene its highly anticipated annual conference here tomorrow, driving an urgent industry-wide push to embed advanced ventilation systems into early-stage mine designs to secure underground workers’ safety.

The two-day flagship event, running from October 29–30 at the Holiday Inn Bulawayo, operates under the theme, “Innovation in Mine Ventilation for Sustainable Mining Growth.”

Speaking ahead of the summit, MVSZ President Dr. Tonderai Chikande stressed that waiting to install ventilation infrastructure until after excavations begin compromises both structural efficiency and occupational safety. He urged mining corporations to treat ventilation design as a foundational engineering requirement rather than a secondary retrofitting measure.

As Zimbabwean mines deepen and increasingly modernise, managing volatile underground working conditions has become a critical operational hurdle. Delegate sessions will focus heavily on mitigating hazardous dust exposure, managing extreme subterranean heat stress, and maintaining optimal airflow across highly mechanised underground networks.

The high-stakes conference brings together a broad coalition of the region’s mining sector, including ventilation engineers, mine managers, occupational safety practitioners, regulatory officials, and equipment suppliers, alongside academic researchers.
