GWERU—A 27-year-old man was shot and injured during a confrontation with mine security guards after allegedly invading Sabi Gold Mine in Zvishavane to illegally prospect for gold, police have confirmed.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 9am at the Sabi Mining site in Runde constituency.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Silent Muvadi (27) in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at Sabi Mine, Zvishavane,” Mahoko said.

Police said Muvadi was part of a gang that had unlawfully entered the mine when they were intercepted by security guards.

“It is alleged that the group fled, but the suspect instead charged towards the security guards while wielding a chisel,” Mahoko said.

“In view of the danger posed, one of the armed security guards fired a single shot, hitting the suspect on the thigh.”
Muvadi was subdued and arrested before being handed over to ZRP Zvishavane.

He sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken to Zvishavane Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Police said investigations were ongoing and a docket was being compiled, with Muvadi and his accomplices expected to face charges of criminal trespass.

Mahoko warned against resisting law enforcement officers during lawful arrests and urged members of the public to follow proper channels when engaging in mining activities.

“We reiterate our call to the public not to resist lawful arrests,” he said. “Those with interests in mining should formally approach the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.”

Illegal mining remains a persistent challenge in the Midlands province, with authorities repeatedly warning that trespassing at operational mines poses serious safety and security risks. (The Midweek Watch)
