Seven pupils have been injured at Globe and Phoenix Primary School after a classroom block caved into a mine shaft this morning.

The injured pupils have been rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital. The Civil Protection team and school authorities are still conducting a roll call to ascertain if there are pupils still buried under the rubble.

Kwekwe is infested with illegal gold miners who operate within proximity of its CBD.

Previous reports say there are several tunnels beneath the city of Kwekwe that form a network of underground tunnels with nearby mines.

Illegal gold panners, have in recent years, dug and emerged from under a classroom at Globe and Phoenix Primary School, located approximately 500 metres from Kwekwe CBD.

Previous reports from city engineers assured residents that city buildings are safe, indicating illegal gold panners can only go as deep as levels one and two. Levels three to 46 are covered by underground water and tunnels are also too narrow to cause significant disturbances outside those depths.  (The Observer) (edited)
