Zimplats records one fatality during 2019 first quarter

HARARE (Mining Index) – PLATINUM giant, Zimplats recorded one fatality towards the end of the first quarter of 2019 at one of its mines.

Richard Mapuranga aged 42 died at Mupfuti Mine in Ngezi following a fall of ground incident whilst barring down.

Presenting results for the 2019 first quarter, Zimplats mourned the death of Mapuranga, adding that the group achieved a safety milestone of 10 million fatality free shifts at the end of the quarter.

‘Regrettably, subsequent to the end of the quarter, the Group recorded a fatality after Mr Richard Mapuranga passed away at Mupfuti Mine on 5 April 2019. The Zimplats board and management team extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Mapuranga.’

‘The safety of employees remains a priority at Zimplats. The Group’s safety strategy remains firmly centred on inculcating an inherently safe production culture and Zimplats remains committed to achieving the ultimate objective of ‘zero harm’. There were no fatalities or lost-time injuries recorded during the quarter ended 31 March 2019,’ said Zimplats.

In 2018, Blanket Gold Mine introduced Nyanzvi, a safety and innovative training program for its workforce aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness following two fatal accidents at the mine. ENDS//
