HARARE (Mining Index) – ALTHOUGH the African continent is blessed with abundant mineral resources such as platinum, chrome, tourmaline, gold, diamonds, oil, coltan, bauxite, uranium, iron ore and other valuable resources, its inhabitants have long numbered among the world’s poorest.
The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa.
Africa has vast mineral wealth that has the potential to transform its economies.
So many questions come to mind as to why Africa is poor.
Is it because of the natural resource curse?
Are Africans not good enough to manage their own mineral resources so they can institute meaningful development?
Some schools of thought believe Africa’s mineral resources have often proved to be a curse than a blessing especially to the majority of the citizens in African countries.
Part of of this curse is attributed to the leadership crisis facing many countries on the African continent.
The DRC, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Angola just to name a few African countries whose citizens are not fully benefiting from the natural resources. ENDS// www.miningindex.co.zw
